Prof. Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao is a distinguished academician with a remarkable career in mechanical engineering. Over his 28-year tenure at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, he has held several prestigious positions, including Professor (HAG), Mehra Professional Chair, and Head of the Department of Planning. Prof. Rao’s academic background is equally impressive, with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Regional Engineering College, Warangal,  M.Tech in Production Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras.

His research expertise encompasses advanced manufacturing processes, with a particular focus on machining of difficult-to-machine materials, micro/nano manufacturing, and metrology. Prof. Rao also played a pivotal role at the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India, New Delhi, where he made substantial contributions to the formulation and implementation of policies aimed at enhancing technical education nationwide. Additionally, he served as a visiting professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, USA.

Prof. Rao has held several prestigious roles, including serving on the Board of Governors at NIT Bhopal and NIT Allahabad. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee on Research in the Machine Tool Sector (C-Mat), constituted by the Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister, and the Working Group on Capital Goods & Engineering Sector for the 12th Five Year Plan, constituted by the Planning Commission of India.

He has successfully guided 27 Ph.D. scholars, with 7 more currently under his supervision. Prof. Rao boasts an impressive publication record, including 125 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 115 conference papers, 5 book chapters, and 5 edited proceedings. He also holds 2 patents. His research impact is reflected in his Google Scholar citations, with an h-index of 52 and an i10-index of 95.

Prof. Rao’s career is marked by numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious BOYSCAST Fellowship from the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. His leadership and academic contributions continue to exert a profound influence on the field of mechanical engineering.
